How Much Does a Space Heater Actually Cost to Run?

A plain-English breakdown of watts, kilowatt-hours and what a plug-in heater really adds to your winter bill.
The only formula you need
Running cost is watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by hours used, multiplied by your electricity rate. A 500W heater running eight hours a day at 17 cents per kilowatt-hour costs about 68 cents a day, or roughly $20 a month.
That number is why zone heating works. Most central systems draw far more because they are conditioning rooms nobody is sitting in. If a plug-in unit lets you drop the thermostat three degrees for the whole house, it usually pays for itself inside one cold season.
The mistake people make is comparing a heater's cost against zero rather than against the alternative. You are not adding a heater to your existing usage; you are trading a small, targeted draw for a large, untargeted one.
Wattage is not the same as warmth
A 1,500W floor heater does not make a room twice as comfortable as a 750W outlet unit. It heats faster and it heats a bigger volume, but comfort saturates. Once the air around you is at your target temperature, extra wattage just cycles the thermostat on and off more often.
What matters more is placement. A heater at floor level fights convection: warm air rises immediately and pools at the ceiling. A unit mounted at outlet height, roughly 16 inches up, starts its warm air closer to the level where you actually sit and sleep.
This is also why the cheapest low-wattage units disappoint. A 350W desk heater is genuinely a desk heater. Rated coverage numbers assume a closed door, an insulated room and no drafts.
Efficiency claims, decoded
Almost every resistive electric heater converts close to all its electricity into heat — that is basic physics, not marketing. When a manufacturer quotes a figure like 99.8%, they are describing conversion, not how well the heat reaches you.
The differences between models come from delivery: how quickly warm air is moved into the room, whether a thermostat holds temperature instead of overshooting, and whether the unit shuts off when the room is warm. A precise thermostat saves more money over a winter than any efficiency percentage on a box.
Look for an adjustable thermostat with a real setpoint in degrees, an ECO or auto mode, and a timer. Those three features are what turn a heater from an always-on power draw into a controlled one.
A realistic monthly estimate
For a bedroom used overnight, budget six to eight hours of runtime a night, but assume the thermostat cuts the element roughly half the time once the room is up to temperature. That halves the theoretical cost.
For a home office, expect close to continuous runtime on cold mornings and very little after midday if the room gets sun. Setting a timer to stop at noon costs nothing and removes the single most common source of waste.
Whatever you buy, check your actual electricity rate on your bill rather than using a national average. Rates vary enough between states that the same heater can cost double to run in one place versus another.
